Surah An Nas – Benefits and Virtues
It was reported that Uqbah bin Amr (رضي الله عنه) said:
When the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم – PBUH) was riding, I followed him and placed my hand on his foot, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, teach me Surah Hud and Surah Yusuf.” You will never recite anything greater before Allah than this, he said:
قل اعوذ برب الفلق
Say: I seek refuge with (Allah), the Lord of the daybreak
and
قل اعوذ برب الناس
Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind
Narrated by Hazrat Aisha (رضي الله عنها)
When Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم – PBUH) went to bed, he used to blow on his hands while reciting the Mu’auwidhat (Surah al Falaq 113 and Surah an Nas 114) and then pass his hands over his body.
Narrated by Hazrat Uqbah bin ‘Amir Al-Juhani (رضي الله عنه)
That the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said: “Some Ayat have been revealed to me the likes of which have not been seen: Qul A’udhu Birabbin-Nas until the end of the Surah and Qul A’udhu Birabbil-Falaq until the end of the Surah.”
Hazrat Abdullah bin Khubaib (رضي الله عنه) reported that
The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said to me, “Recite Surat Al-Ikhlas and Al- Mu’awwidhatain (Surah al Falaq and Surah an Nas) three times at dawn and dusk. It will suffice you in all respects.”
Narrated by Hazrat Aisha (رضي الله عنها)
Whenever Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) became sick, he would recite Mu’awwidhat (Surah al Falaq and Surah an Nas) and then blow his breath over his body. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite (these two Surahs) and rub his hands over his body hoping for its blessings.
Narrated by Hazrat Aisha (رضي الله عنها)
Whenever the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surah al Falaq and Surah An Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times.
Hazrat Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) reported that
The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) used to seek protection against the evil of jinn and the evil eyes till Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas were revealed. After they were revealed, he took to them for seeking Allah’s protection and left everything besides them.
It was narrated that Hazrat Aishah (رضي الله عنها) said
“When the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) came to a sick person, he would make supplication for him, and would say:
Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness.’”
It was narrated that Hazrat Aishah (رضي الله عنها) said
“The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge using the following words:
(Take away the affliction, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer and there is no healing that leaves no sickness).’
When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) fell sick with the sickness that would be his last, I took his hand and wiped it over his body and recited these words. He withdrew his hand from mine and said:
‘O Allah, forgive me and let me meet the exalted companions (i.e., those who occupy high positions in Paradise).’ Those were the last words of his that I heard.”
It was narrated that Hazrat Zainab (رضي الله عنها) said
“There was an old woman who used to enter upon us and perform Ruqyah from erysipelas (a contagious disease which causes fever and leaves a red coloration of the skin). We had a bed with long legs, and when ‘Abdullah entered he would clear his throat and make noise. He entered one day and when she heard his voice she veiled herself from him. He came and sat beside me, and touched me, and he found a sting. He said: ‘What is this?’ I said: ‘An amulet against erysipelas.’ He pulled it, broke it and threw it away, and said: ‘The family of ‘Abdullah has no need of polytheism.’ I heard the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) say: “Ruqyah (i.e., which consist of the names of idols and devils etc.), amulets and Tiwalah (charms) are polytheism.’” “I said: ‘I went out one day and so-and-so looked at me, and my eye began to water on the side nearest him. When I recited Ruqyah for it, it stopped, but if I did not recite Ruqyah it watered again.’ He said: ‘That is Satan, if you obey him he leaves you alone but if you disobey him he pokes you with his finger in your eye. But if you do what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to do, that will be better for you and more effective in healing. Sprinkle water in your eye and say:
(Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness).’”
It was narrated that Hazrat Abdul-‘Aziz bin Juraij (رضي الله عنه) said
“We asked ‘Aishah what the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) used to recite in Witr. She said: ‘He used to recite: “Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most High,” [Al-A’la (87)] in the first Rak’ah, ‘Say: “O disbelievers!’” [Al- Kafirun (109)] in the second Rak’ah, and ‘Say: Allah is One’ in the third and the Mu’awwidhatain (Chapters 113, 114).’”
Narrated by Uqbah bin ‘Amir (رضي الله عنه)
“The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) ordered me to recite Al-Mu’awwidhatain at the end of every Salat.”
It was narrated from Hazrat Uqbah bin ‘Amir (رضي الله عنه) that
He asked the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) about Al-Mu’awwidhatain. ‘Uqbah said: “The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) recited them when he led us in Salah Al-Ghadah (As-Subh).”
It was narrated from Hazrat Aishah (رضي الله عنها) that
He asked the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) about Al-Mu’awwidhatain. ‘Uqbah said: “The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) recited them when he led us in Salah Al-Ghadah (As-Subh).”
Surah An Nas – Benefits
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (رحمه الله) writes
If the last two Surahs of the Holy Quraan, Suratul-Falaq and Suratul-Naas, are recited for protection against sickness, sorcery (jadu), evil-eye (nazar), and other such things, it should be very beneficial. A Taweez of these two Surahs has the same effect. It’s also very effective to recite them and blow on someone. If someone recites them before going to bed, he will be safe and protected from all disasters.
Children can be protected from all illnesses, including epilepsy, by reciting the two Surahs mentioned above and blowing on them.
